What the guy is probably seeing is a Federal Drawing Number (sometimes erroneously referred to as a Federal Stock Number). Barrels were never serial numbered.

The Serial number is N04936, being one of the first 5000 ever issued to the Army. It's not in bad shape but does have some wear especially on the trigger and a small amount near the muzzle.
