I would go to Kauai for the first time with kids and then start saving for the Big Island. Kauai is my favorite island, followed by the Big island.The east side of the BI in March near Hilo can be just as wet and wild as the east side of Maui. Personally I would not commit a stay to either at that time of year. I would pick a spot on Maui anywhere from Kaanapali on down south and try the South Kohala Coast on the BI. Both give you the best chance of drier weatherHi again! I've visited the Big Island 3 times over the past two decades, but never by myself. I'm heading there by myself later this month, staying at the Fairmont Orchid.I'm a little anxious about what to do on this trip by myself - I usually love to go snorkeling, but I assume that's out of the question by myself for safety concerns.
This gives you 2 bases to do day trips from which will save you driving time. Spend your Kona side time snorkelling and enjoying the beaches and Hilo side time at VNP and seeing waterfalls.
