Everyone needs a break (stretch, bathroom, food/drink, etc.), but if you know you're going to be inactive for longer than 10 minutes, just check on your pirate before the 10 minutes are up, move the camera, and reset the timer. 10 minutes is very generous.

Doing one of the hide emotes will extend your AFK timer to about 15 min. I do this whenever I'm stepping out for a smoke. Also, if you have SoT on Steam, you can use the SteamLink app on your phone. Super helpful for me. If you're able to get back to the game, adjusting the FOV will reset your AFK timer, so you can go back to whatever you're doing.

There should be a menu option where you can toggle the afk timer for your teammates or something, similarly to voting to lock them in the brig.
