Dwarf fortress dormitory vs bedroom.
The water itself isn't muddy, just the floor, which is normal for floors that get wet. Water running on muddy floors won't get muddy. One thing you do have to watch for though is trees growing in those muddy tiles, blocking the water.

Now say in that same fortress, one of your dwarves is made the Baron of another site. The Baron's room has to be more valuable than the count's, and the count's room has to be more valuable than all of the other dwarves.
In the non-square maps, this is because my forts were being designed with a specific format: River -> Mountain face -> initial tunnels/later entryway -> Fortress proper -> important rooms. 3 tiles was more than enough sideways room for those forts, while 5 tile depth gave me a lot of space to work inwards with.
I've always assigned 5 children to a room in the 2014ver so they took up less space in my fortress, whilst adult dwarves separately had their own rooms. Was this removed?
