There's a limit on how much negative karma you can get on a post, let's assume it's 10k. That means that if you get 20k downvotes and 12k upvotes, the comment will he scored as 8k downvotes. BUT since there's a 10k cap, as far as karma goes he essentially got 10k downvotes and 12k upvotes, giving the person 2k comment karma.
