As far as the kingpin vs hyper switch, I believe they essentially do the same thing dependent on the generation of maglock you get. I went with two sets of kingpin and gen 4 maglocks. When you buy a maglock it’ll give you options of pins to choose from, so say you chose the gen 4 maglock, you would select kingpin as your pin option.

Haven't had the buffer scratched up like that but having a "break-in" period of 500-1000 rounds is shitty when 556 is almost a dollar a round. Maybe you'll have better luck with something like the Hogue Freedom Fighter with the Kingpin?
Also, for the KingPin, most AR-10’s have detent pins that come up from the pistol grip, but a few manufacturers have them come from the rear castle nut just like an AR-15 platform. If the detent hole is covered by the buffer tube, then that is a Rear Detent Pin platform.
