Surveys were conducted in the valley floor area of the Wind Wolves Preserve (Figure 1). This area extends across the northern portion of the Preserve and forms the southern extent of the San Joaquin Valley. The area encompasses approximately 8300 ha (ca. 20,500 ac) and generally is below 305 m (1000 ft) in elevation. Why Bakersfield isn't flocking to Wind Wolves Preserve in droves is beyond me. It's between Maricopa and Old River Road off Hwy 166 (watch for their sign), offers FREE camping, has awesome FREE programs, is a superb place to hike, picnic, shoot pictures and just enjoy nature by yourself or with friends.
