This may not be much help, but it really could be a level issue. I didnt have any problems with him being in my mid-20's, just kept chasing him down and /facebashing / stabbing him. But i also remember being really low level when doing Red Eagle, had to use the Larry/Moe/Curly method around his coffin to live.

He will spawn two copies of himself, you should take roughly 1/4 of Geirmund's health, so you can tell him appart from his copies.
