Kenmore 80 series washer won't spin

Kenmore 80 series washer will not agitate. My washer will go through the entire wash cycle, but skips the agitating parts. It spins and drains just fine. When we first noticed this problem it would start to agitate if we pushed in and pulled out the start nob. Or if we tapped on the side of the nob it would start it would begin agitating.

The biggest problem is that frequently it doesn't spin all the water out of the clothes, they are still soaking wet at the end of the cycle. It sometimes makes an intermittent grinding noise during the agitation cycle, but usually only with light loads. The drive block drives the washer which drives the metal clip which drives the agitator shaft. Pull the clip off and lift the washer up to see if the tang has broken off. If you are unable to rotate the agitator shaft by hand while washer is in spin mode or even after spin has stopped, there is a problem with the gearcase.
