Well you can use the discoveries to specialise in one weapon and get the dex to dmg. Multiclassing make you loose the ultimate mutagen (+8 str, con, dex and -2 the others) and some extracts. Grenadier being the most focused on it. Their bombs are inherent abilites that don't use consumables. All alchemists get bonuses with thrown consumables but its meant as a fun extra rather than the primary means of damage.
